Hauwa Dahiru, a 25-year-old lady residing in the Rimin Kebe locality in Kano State, claims that the effects of what transpired on May 3rd, 2023, will be ingrained in her memory for the rest of her life.
This is because her 22-year-old sibling, Ibrahim Musa, purportedly murdered their mother, Hajara Mohammed, who was 50 years old, by stabbing her to death on that fateful day.
After the failure of her second marriage, Hajara had been residing with her three kids. She had two children from her previous marriage, and Ibrahim was her second child. Ibrahim's father requested that he take custody of his child.
According to the BBC, Hauwa disclosed that they had just finished their lunch at approximately 2:30 pm, with her, her sister, and Hajara, before Hajara expressed her desire to visit her close neighbor and friend.
Following Hajara's departure, Hauwa and her sister continued their conversation until Ibrahim arrived around 5:30 p.m., inquiring about their mother's whereabouts.
Hauwa informed him that their mother was nearby but suggested that he go find her if he wanted to see her himself, oblivious to the fact that he was armed with a knife.
Not long after, they overheard him conversing with their mother at the entrance of the house. They then heard her scream in agony as he repeatedly stabbed her with a knife. Hauwa expressed that it was the most horrendous experience of her life.
As soon as they heard her screams, they realized something was wrong. By the time they reached the scene, Ibrahim had fled. Hauwa acknowledged that her brother had a history of violence towards their mother, even though she had not witnessed it firsthand.
She recounted an incident when their mother relocated Ibrahim to Kaduna, near their family, to seek traditional medical assistance as they suspected that he was possessed by an evil spirit. During this time, her family alleged that he had physically assaulted their mother, which caused some of them to avoid him.
Additionally, there were suspicions among some individuals that Ibrahim was into drug abuse. Hauwa mentioned that she had not seen Ibrahim in a long time until he came to visit on Wednesday.
He had been residing with his father in the Kurna area, and they had no reason to suspect that he was carrying a knife. Currently, Hauwa, her sister, and other family members are grieving at the house, mourning the loss of Hajara, who was known for being kind-hearted and compassionate.
Aisha Mohammed, Hajara's third child, expressed to news reporters that her heart is filled with anger over what happened. She hopes that the court and government will do justice for their mother.
Hauwa emphasized that just because Ibrahim is their brother, justice should not be lenient on him. She stressed that they are talking about their mother, and the severity of the crime cannot be ignored.
Even if the court were to acquit Ibrahim, he would face significant difficulty living in any community due to the gravity of his actions. Hauwa believes that the best course of action for Ibrahim, even for his benefit, is for justice to be served.
The police have taken the suspect into custody following a 24-hour search. According to a statement made by the spokesperson for the Kano Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the 22-year-old suspect, Ibrahim, was arrested 48 hours after the murder took place.
The spokesperson who had first reported the incident confirmed that the police conducted a thorough search of all areas in Kano to apprehend the suspect.
"We have successfully apprehended 22-year-old Ibrahim, and he was discovered in the Dawakin Tofa local government area of Kano." "Upon the completion of our investigations, we will arraign him in court," stated Officer Kiyawa.
