An Aide to president Muhammadu Buhari on social media, Lauretta Onochie, has expressed her opinion regarding the expectations of Nigerians when it comes to getting justice from the Nigerian police. Accort to a statement made by Lauretta Onochie, the morale of the Nigerian police officers are at it's all time lowest. According to Lauretta Onochie, the Nigerian police officers has been targeted and killed but none of their killers has been made to pay for the murder of the police officers.
According to Lauretta Onochie, since the gruesome murder of 27 police officers who were killed during the chaotic period witnessed in Nigeria, nobody has been made to pay for the murder of those officers. Lauretta Onochie reminded the public that one of the officers was murdered, roasted and eaten by his killers. According to Lauretta Onochie, till date, no one has been convicted of killing 27 police officers. Lauretta Onochie said that if we can't get justice for these officers and their families, how can Nigerians expect justice from the Nigerian police.
From the opinion of Lauretta Onochie, it is evident that she is of the view that justice for the slain Nigerian police officers should be the top priority and not justice for the ordinary people. However, there is a second interpretation of what Lauretta Onochie could have meant when she said that the Nigerians shouldn't expect justice from the Nigerian police. The second interpretation is that since the Nigerian police have not been able to get justice for their slain officers and their families, it will be unrealistic to expect the same police to get justice for Nigerians.
No matter how you decide to interpret what Lauretta Onochie meant, one thing which we must all understand from her statement is that both the slain Nigerian police officers and other aggrieved Nigerians are yet to get justice for their various plights. If the Nigerian police force has been unable to get justice for their dead officers, how realistic can it be to think that the police will be able to get justice for Nigerians?
