Domestic Abuse or violence is a topic that cuts across mental health and requires proper education in modern times, Domestic violence also called dating violence, partner abuse, spousal abuse, intimate partner violence, and domestic abuse takes many forms. This manner of maltreatment is defined as one person in an intimate relationship using diverse means to put down or control the other person.

Types of domestic abuse include physical, verbal (also called emotional, mental, or psychological abuse), sexual, economic/financial, and spiritual abuse. Stalking and even cyber-stalking (internet) are also forms of intimate partner abuse. Here are facts about Domestic violence everyone should know about;

-Domestic violence which may also be regarded as intimate partner violence, domestic abuse, dating violence, spousal abuse, and is any form of maltreatment that takes place in a heterosexual or homosexual romantic relationship between adults or adolescents.

-Partner Abuse is a major public / mental health challenge that ravages the world as a whole affecting more than 3 million women and 500,000 men and resulting in homelessness, injury, or even death of sufferers, it also costs alot for government to cater to needs of victims.

-The major risk factors for men and women victims include races, religions, social economic status, and sexual orientations as other factors include lack of a high school education, witnessing family violence as a child, having a low sense of self-worth and substance abuse also cause domestic abuse.

-Also Intimate partner abuse has been noticed in cases and continues to be endorsed in societies through legal sanctioning of the subjection of women and lack of legal protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community.

-Certain Warning signs for individuals to consider if they suspect they are the victim of partner violence include feeling demeaned, assaulted, or excessively controlled by their partner and at work if they exhibit stress related behaviors such as frequent absences from school or work, numerous injuries the victim tries to explain, low self-esteem, personality changes, fear of conflicts, passive aggression. 

-Domestic abuse is most times rarely diagnosed as the most effectively way of assesement is when the professional asks questions that call for more than a "yes" or "no" answer and do not directly inquire about domestic abuse, at least earlier during any assessment.

-The prognosis of domestic violence can be quite negative if it goes on untreated, as the emotional and physical consequences of abuse overtime can be detrimental and may even lead to homicide. Treatment and enhancing social supports to the victim can improve prognosis.
