2 Questions That Need Answers From Mikel Arteta As Willian Borges Agrees To Terminate His Contract

Arsenal signed Brazilian winger Willian Borges on a free transfer from Chelsea last summer. Willian had declined a two-year contract extension with Chelsea and made the move across London to the Emirates stadium.

Currently, Arsenal is in a rebuilding process and having lost the first two matches of the new Premier League season to Brentford FC and Chelsea, the Gunners are releasing underperforming players who will most likely be replaced before the end of the transfer window.

So far, Arsenal has signed Nuno Tavares from Benfica FC for 8 million pounds, Albert Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht for 17 million pounds and Ben White from Brighton and Hove Albion for 50 million pounds.

Last week, Martin Odegaard was signed from Real Madrid for 30 million pounds and Aaron Ramsdale also arrived at the Emirates stadium from Sheffield United for 24 million pounds. To compete for the top four positions, Arsenal needs to sign a central midfielder, a right-back and a striker before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

News emerged that Willian Borges has agreed to terminate his existing contract with Arsenal and leave on a free transfer despite having two years left to run on his deal. The Brazilian winger hasn't performed up to expectations since he arrived at the Emirates Stadium last summer.

As both parties (Arsenal and Willian) prepare to terminate the contract agreement, two questions readily come to mind for Mikel Arteta to answer and I am sure most Arsenal fans would like to know the answers.

1. WHY EXACTLY WAS WILLIAN SIGNED? At the time of Willian's arrival at the Emirates stadium, he was already 32 years old. Knowing that the premier league requires optimal pace and fitness, what exactly was Arsenal or Mikel Arteta expecting from a 32-year-old winger. If Willian was a defender, it would be an understandable deal because defenders do not have to run as much as wingers. So why exactly was Willian signed?

2. WILL WILLIAN BE REPLACED BY A MIDFIELDER OR WINGER? When Willian finally departs from the Emirates stadium, what profile of player would replace him? Would it be a midfielder or a winger? Arsenal has been linked with a move for Olympic Lyon's Houssem Aouar but he's a midfielder, not a winger. So if Willian departs, will he be replaced by a midfielder or a winger?

What are your opinions about these questions?
