BRE 0-1 CHE: Full Match Report, Highlights And Player Ratings

Chelsea returned to the top of the Premier League after a 1-0 win over Brentford, thanks in part to Edouard Mendy's late performances.

In the first half, Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo struck the post, and Chelsea's Timo Werner wasted two good chances, but Chilwell's half-volley from just inside the box (45), his third goal in three games for club and country, put Chelsea ahead at the break.

Mendy saved excellently three opportunities late on, first from sub Saman Ghoddos, then from Pontus Jansson at point-blank range with his face, before tipping over Christian Norgaard's magnificent overhead kick in stoppage time.

The burden was on Chelsea to keep up the pace in what appears to be a tight title fight after wins for Liverpool and Man City earlier in the day, and they did it with their sixth win of the season.

Brentford has lost just twice this season and sits in seventh place after eight games.

HOW THE MATCH WENT DOWN:

Chelsea reclaimed top spot in the Premier League with an unimpressive 1-0 victory over Brentford in west London.

Thomas Tuchel's team had few chances and were fortunate that the hosts' only major chances came late in the game.

The game's first major moment came when Bryan Mbeumo struck the post for Brentford, before Chelsea ran down the other end on the attack and Romelu Lukaku placed the ball in the net-but the Belgian was offside and the goal was ruled out.

Mbeumo's shot was easily stopped by Edouard Mendy, while Mateo Kovacic's free-kick was diverted barely over the top of David Raya's net.

Chelsea seized the lead through Ben Chilwell on the stroke of half-time. The England international was on hand to fire the ball into the top corner after Brentford failed to deal with a cross.

After the interval, the Bees began to look more dangerous from set plays and went in search of fouls, and their first genuine chance of the half came from a throw, but Mendy was equal to Ivan Toney's shot.

With 15 minutes remaining, Mbeumo believed he had levelled, but his shot rebounded against the post, then Toney was pulled down in the area by Trevoh Chalobah while offside, but demands for a penalty were turned down.

Brentford pressed for an equalizer, with Saman Ghoddos and Christian Norgaard barely missing from close range during a Chelsea scramble.

Similarly, Pontus Jansson came close but was stopped by Mendy, who also made a superb save to deny a Norgaard overhead kick in injury time as Chelsea escaped with a win.
