France Football has announced that there won't be an annual Balon d'Or award for the year 2020. The body made the announcement that the cancellation of the prize is inevitable due to the impact of COVID 19 on football across the world.
The announcement means Cristiano Ronaldo of Juventus won't be able to add to his collection of Ballon d'Or. At the same time, last year winner, Lionel Messi will also have to wait for another year if he is going to win the award again.
The body in charge of the awards says, For the first time in its history, which began in 1956, the Ballon d'Or will not be awarded in 2020.
With the latest announcement, Lionel Messi will keep the award for extra one year. The likes of Robert Lewandowski, Kevin De Bruyne and Sadio Mane will need to be on top of their games again next year to compete for the award.
