The 25-year-old midfielder showed Thomas Tuchel that he is ready to fight for his place in the Chelsea squad, and after his calm and classy performance against Aston Villa, Loftus-Cheek should not be ruled out of starting against the Premier League Champions on Saturday.
His twisting and turning, his command in the middle of the park alongside Saul and N’golo Kante in the first half was so superb.
Ruben Loftus Cheek clearly rolled down the years with his commanding display against Villa.
As Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic were rested, Chelsea’s coach opted for Ruben Loftus-Cheek, N’golo Kante and Saul Niguez in Chelsea’s midfield.
Chelsea’s first half performance against Villa was very drab, but the blues upped the tempo in the second half. Aston Villa cancelled out Timo Werner’s second half header to make the score 1-1, but Chelsea were able to claim the win through Penalty shootout.
Many Chelsea players had flat performances but one midfielder’s performance stood out. Although Ruben Loftus-Cheek was deployed in a deep midfield role, he was able to defend well, and even help the team attack. He was clearly Chelsea’s best midfielder against a very stubborn Aston Villa side.
He was Chelsea’s shining star in the midfield against Villa. Loftus-Cheek created the most chances (3) for Chelsea despite playing in a deeper role.
He also showed his quick feet by completing the most dribbles (5) in the match against Villa.
His dominated the midfield by winning more duels (9) than any other player on the pitch.
His performance is a “positive problem” for Tuchel who will be looking to give him a more important role in the team.
Loftus-Cheek and Mount.
Loftus-Cheek should be in contention to start against Manchester City. His performance against Villa shows that he can offer what Mason Mount currently struggles to do for Chelsea.
He brings more to Chelsea attack with his height and forward play.
Ruben-Loftus Cheek clearly knows how to work his way into a competitive team. He did the same thing under Maurizio Sarri but he got injured later in the 2018/19 season. Hopefully, he continues to impress Tuchel and slowly work his way back into the Chelsea XI.
