After a busy week in Europe, the English Premier League resumes today with so much drama and action to feed our eyes with. The race for the top 4 this season looks to be hotter than the race for the Premier League title as Manchester City looks unstoppable at the moment, leading other clubs with a significant margin on the EPL table. Chelsea and Liverpool suffered a huge blow in their top 4 race as they dropped vital points in their respective fixtures today. Let's take a look at some notable things that happened in the matches played already in the EPL today and how the EPL table was affected.
Southampton vs Chelsea (FT Score: 1-1)
Chelsea traveled to the St Mary's Stadium to face Southampton with the hope of making it 5 successive wins in the EPL and also with the hope of closing the gap between them and Manchester United on the EPL table. The Blues couldn't get the job done as they went home with just one point, following a 1-1 against Southampton at St Mary's Stadium. A first-half strike from Takumi Minamino and a second-half penalty which was taken by Mount Mount ensured that the points were shared between the two sides. The 1-1 draw was a disappointing result for Chelsea and the Blues will have to make amends when they welcome Manchester United to Stamford Bridge on the last day of the month.
Burnley vs West Bromwich Albion (FT Score: 0-0)
Despite playing with 10 men for one hour, West Brom held Burnley to a goalless draw at the Turf Moor today in what was absolutely a tough encounter. The visitors were reduced to 10 men after Semi Ajayi was shown a red card in the 30th minute. A home team couldn't capitalize on the red card advantage and as both failed to find the back of the net, the game ended in a goalless draw.
Liverpool vs Everton (FT Score: 0-2)
The Merseyside Derby between Liverpool and Everton, which was probably the most anticipated game of the day lived up to our expectations as it produced some world-class football actions, coupled with a big surprise. Everton shocked Liverpool today as they thrashed them 2-0 at their Anfield. Goals from Richarlison and Sigurdsson secured a big win for the away team which is their first win at Anfield since 1999. Liverpool have now lost 4 home matches in a row and the earlier things get back to normalcy at the club, the better.
The current look of the EPL table
After Chelsea drew and Liverpool lost to Everton today, Everton are now leveled with Liverpool in terms of points. Manchester City are still 10 points clear on the EPL table. Manchester United and Leicester are in the 2nd and 3rd position respectively with 46 points each. Chelsea are sitting in the 4th position with only 1 point above West Ham.
Do you think Chelsea will catch up with Manchester United or Manchester City on the EPL table? Can Liverpool still make the top 4 this season?
