Liverpool took the football world by storm as they won their first English Premier League title in 30 years in spectacular fashion. They were simply a joy to watch en route their journey towards clinching the title. A couple of records were created, equalled and surpassed by the Reds, much to the admiration to their fans and foes as they were domineering atop the log.
Jurgen Klopp’s side won the league with seven games to spare. After their triumph, there have been a couple of disappointing results. They have now lost two games, drew one and won one game as the new champions. At this point in time, one can wonder if these are the writings on the wall for dwindling fortunes when the new season begins.
Firstly, they were soundly beaten 4-0 by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. As if that wasn’t enough, a disappointing 1-1 draw against Brighton raised a few eye brows as to whether the team could retain the title. The final straw that broke the camel’s back was the 2-1 loss to a struggling Arsenal side on Wednesday night. Two costly errors from Virgil Van Dijk and Alisson Becker in goal handed the Gunners an uplifting victory and dampening defeat to the Reds.
Although, they could be pardoned for their complacency on grounds that they have already won the title. But, they still wanted to join the elite list of teams like Juventus, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City to reach the 100 points tally in a season. That dream died after the final whistle was blown at the Emirates Stadium.
Obviously, the zeal and hunger to win games has declined in the players after an impressive Premier League campaign. Also, we cannot rule out the probability that other teams could have demystified the tactical acumen of Jurgen Klopp. These recent turn out of events could be a preamble to what is going to happen next season or it might just be that they started losing games because they won the league much more earlier than expected.
We never can tell. But when the curtain opens for the beginning of the new season, we shall find out.
