Chelsea chose today, August 4, to present the trophy because they were unable to do so due to Convid-19 restrictions.
In my opinion, presenting the CL trophy today to their fans is a noble thing to do for the following reasons:
Chelsea began the 2020/21 season on the heels of a heartbreaking FA Cup final defeat to Arsenal.

To make matters worse, Chelsea was the first to score in the first half, thanks to Christian Pulisic's effort. However, Aubameyang scored twice, to give Arsenal a well deserved victory.

Chelsea struggled in the following season under Frank Lampard. Chelsea's season deteriorated to the point where they were no longer in the top six position by January, 2021.
Eventually, after it was obvious that Frank Lampard couldn't lead Chelsea in the right direction, He was sacked, and Thomas Tuchel was appointed.
Did their supporters abandon them during this time? We can not speak for Chelsea fans individually. But certainly, Chelsea fans stood solidly behind Chelsea and supported them during those troubled moment.
They were considered underdogs in the Champions League and had already been written off.
Chelsea were never given a chance against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. Yet, in the final, Mancity received the shock of their lives. Thanks to Kai Havertz, who scored the only goal in the final to ensure that Chelsea silenced their doubters.
