It is rare to see big football clubs buying players on loan, especially clubs who are amongst the favourites to win the Champions League. It is because these big teams are rich and see no use of loaning a player instead of buying them.
However, the recent Covid-19 pandemic has shown that nothing is assured and any club, no matter how rich can enter a financial turmoil. At this stage loaning a player instead of buying them is seen as a more financially friendly deal.
With that being said, here are 4 players that won the Champions League with a team that they were on loan with.
It may surprise you to know that the Austrian International has won the Champions League before.
The former Stoke City striker won the Champions League early in his career. Back in the 2009/10 season, Inter tried signing him, but it fell through. So, they decided to make a loan offer for him.
Arnautovic joined Inter on loan from Twente and was part of the Inter team that lifted the Champions League under Jose Mourinho. With he played in just 3 games for Inter, it did not stop him from receiving his winners medal.
2. Alvaro Odriozola
When Real Madrid signed Odriozola, they had already won 3 Champions League titles in a row. After his first season at Real Madrid, the Spaniard got to taste continental success when he moved on loan to Bayern Munich.
Bayern needed someone who could help in the wing-back position, hence his loan move. He only appeared in 5 matches for the Bavarians but was among the players that lifted the trophy.
3. Ivan Perisic
Just like Odriozola, Perisic moved to Bayern during the 2019/20 season. Bayern intended to make the loan move permanent, but they couldn't meet Inter’s demands.
Perisic had a wonderful season with Bayern, scoring 8 goals and delivering 10 assists in 35 appearances. He further went on to win the UEFA Champions League, DFB Pokal and the Bundesliga.
4. Philippe Coutinho
Barcelona signed Coutinho with lofty ambitions, as they wanted to win the Champions League. Coutinho was under pressure to perform, and when he did not, he was shipped to Bayern on loan.
Coutinho’s stay in Bayern was memorable, as he won the Champions League he was supposed to win at Barcelona. He also scored 11 goals and gave 9 assists in 38 appearances.
