Italy could break this record with a win or draw at Switzerland on Sunday.

Italy made an underwhelming return to action after the triumph at Euro 2020 on Thursday as the Azzurri was held to a 1-1 draw with Bulgaria in a low-key 2022 World Cup qualifier.

Italy still lead the group despite their draw at home against Bulgaria, four points ahead of Switzerland, who did not play on Thursday and host the European champions in Basel on Sunday.

With their draw at home, the Azzurri have now equalled the all-time record of Brazil and Spain, who were unbeaten for 35 straight matches.

The Azzurri had a terrific run under Mancini and even won the Euro 2020 unbeaten, with Mancini's side defeating the three lions of England in the final after a nerve-wracking penalty shootout.

Their last defeat came on September 10, 2018, in the group stage of the UEFA Nations League in 2018 against Portugal.

They are at the verge of becoming a lone national team with longest unbeaten run with a win or draw at Switzerland on Sunday.

The current European champions will be determined to make history against the experienced and strong team of Switzerland when they meet on Sunday.
