Opinion: Messi's Negative Impact In The PSG Squad Could Affect His Balon D'Or Pursuit

The truth of the matter is that this year's Balon D'Or award winner is going to be a very difficult one to determine owing to the fact that most of the players that are among the candidates to win the award are not really having a very significant impact in their respective teams ever since this season started. The Balon D'Or Award is not an award given to players based on their performances in a particular single but for their performances in a whole calendar year.

Lionel Messi is considered as one of the strongest candidates to win the award owing to the fact that he had a very sensational performance during his country's Copa America competition. His contributions in that Barcelona team was also supposed to give him a very good chance in that Balon D'Or power ranking. However, Barcelona's overall performance is nothing to write home about and this could also be another limiting factor in his Balon D'Or race.

Messi will be expected to come up against the likes Robert Lewandowski, N'golo Kante, Jorginho who have already been named the UEFA Men's Player of the year, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kevin De Bruyne and even Ruben Dias.

This last summer transfer window brought with its own unique features and mind blowing transfer deals as the likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo changed clubs. Lionel Messi's performance ever since he completed his move to Paris Saint German have not been a nice one as he has failed to make any significant impact in that team. Lionel Messi is yet to register a single goal and assist in his last seven appearances for the French Ligue 1 giants.

If his performances for PSG is considered, Messi might find it difficult to win this award. Because the award is given based on a player's performance in a calendar year and not in a single season.
