Sierra Leone will qualify for the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals with a win in their last match of Group L match, at home to Benin. This is one tough game, with the two sides vying for the remaining slot after Nigeria confirmed top spot. Benin are second in the group with seven points while third placed Sierra Leone have four. All of Sierra Leone’s points have been garnered from draws; they’re winless in this group but with just a win in this game, they’ll have booked their ticket to the finals. They haven’t scored in their last two matches, and have just one win in the last 14 matches. In AFCON qualifiers, Sierra Leone have one win in seven. They lost 1-0 to Benin in the first meeting between the nations.
Benin need just a draw and they’ll be through to the AFCON finals. Unlike Sierra Leone, they have won two of the five Group L matches and only stumbled in their last game as they lost at home to Nigeria. They have no goal in the last two matches, but have three wins in five and just a loss. Defensively, they’ve done well, with four clean sheets in five matches ahead of this and just one loss in the last four AFCON qualification matches. A number of teams playing away from home in the final round of qualifiers have lost their matches and Benin will be hoping they don’t join the bandwagon. South Africa and Uganda were the big casualties. It should be a cause for concern, with Benin having gone winless in the last six away matches in AFCON qualifiers, losing four. Their attacking returns on the road have also not been impressive, with the team failing to score in three of five away AFCON qualification matches. They’ve also conceded two or more goals in four of their last six away matches in AFCON qualifiers.
