Popular footballers who later became politicians

Footballers prefer going into coaching or punditry after hanging their boots, but small numbers have looked else where or turned their hands into politics.

These footballers who turned into politicians have enjoyed mixed level of success.

4. Sol Campbell

Sol, after his long search for a managerial role, he also made it clear that he is a member of the conservative Party. He consider running for the office in 2014, when his name was thrown into the ring, when the election for the Mayor of London were discussed- but he could not make the Tories shortlist.

3. Gianni Rivera

Only few players made more appearance for AC Milan than Gianni. He went on to become the club Vice president after retiring from professional football.

He later became an MP, serve as an under Secretary of Defence and was a member of European parliament between 2005 and 2009.

From becoming an all time top goal scorer for both Galatasaray and Turkey to being exiled to the United State, he could return to his Homeland.

He went into politics when his football career came to an end. Sukur became an MP for the ruling party. He later choose to leave the party and remain independent MP in 2003, as tension grew between the"Gulenist", who wanted Turkey to become a more Islamic country, and Erdogan's rule.

In 2016, his boss Gulen was blamed for a failed coup and it was ordered that anyone found connected to him should be arrested. Sukur fled to America. He was charged with insulting the country president on Twitter, he was also accused as a suspected member of an armed terrorist group - he could face death penalty if he ever return.

1. George Weah

The first and only African player to have won the prestigious award " Ballon d'Or". It may have seemed surprising to come out of nowhere when he was elected Liberia president, after Helen Johnson, but his political career had been in the working for years.

The former Monaco, PSG and AC Milan goal scorer contested go presidency in 2005, he was told, not educated enough to have the position. He went to America to earn a degree.

After, he was elected to the Senate, on his third attempt Weah was finally sworn in as the President of Liberia January 2018.
