Chelsea advanced into the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions league for the first time since 2014 after their victory over Atletico Madrid tonight. The blues held the advantage, heading into this fixture at Stamford Bridge and this time, it was the same outcome. Tuchel had to name a relatively weaker team after some of his players were banned for this second leg and the rest injured. Christensen was surprisingly left out of the squad but Tuchel later confirmed to the media that the Dane had fallen sick just a few hours prior.
In the first half, Chelsea looked dominat and even though Atletico Madrid threatened a little, the blues defenders were equal to the task. Things started looking a little out of place for Atletico Madrid after a swift counter attack by Chelsea led to a goal by Hakim Ziyech, extending Chelsea's lead over the two legs to 2-0. In the second half, Atletico Madrid made a few changes and it was evident that Diego Simeone's side hasn't given up yet. But all of their Hope's were dashed when Stefan Savic was sent off for an elbow on Antonio Rudiger following a corner. From then on, Chelsea were in total control and rounded off the game with an Emerson goal.
One thing the cameras spotted after Emerson's goal was how Mason Mount, Jorginho and Thiago Silva reacted to the goal. Mount and Jorginho were suspended and Silva was ruled out through injury but that did not stop them from coming to cheer on their teammates. Immediately Emerson found the bottom corner in the extra time of the game, Mount, Jorginho and Silva were captured jumping and screaming at the top of their lungs with joy. The trio hugged each other tightly and were excited as any Chelsea fan. This shows the unity and togetherness in this Chelsea side. Also for Emerson, this will be a huge moment for the Italian. Next.... is the quarter finals for the blues.
