Premier League

Two things Chelsea lack in the midfield, and why it is affecting Chelsea now.

Chelsea demonstrated once again why they are rated as joint second favourites to win the English Premier League title, along with Liverpool, with a 3-1 thrashing of Southampton at Stamford Bridge Stadium. However, during the course of the match on Saturday, I noticed that there are two things that Chelsea lack in midfield, and how it really affects the performances of their strikers, as revealed below.

1. Chelsea lacks a creative passer.

Mateo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek did a very good job yesterday with the fluidity with which they flowed in the midfield for Chelsea against Southampton. But with due respect, they were no where near the standard needed for a creative passer like Cesc Fabregas.

Lukaku surely needs the services of a creative passer like Kelvin De-Bruyne to be able to fufil his potential at Chelsea. It's either Kovacic and Ruben's loftus cheeks or One of Kai Havertz or Mason Mount steps up, or the board seeks a midfielder who is both creative and a good passer of the ball elsewhere in the January transfer window, or the team will continue to suffer upfront.

2. Chelsea also lacks Shooting Midfielders.

I have watched Jorginho, Ngolo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and the other midfielders available at Chelsea at the moment. They are neither creative passers of the ball, nor are they good shooters or long-range shooters like Frank Lampard, Oscar, Ramirez, or even Hazard. Chelsea need midfielders who can shoot from long range and even at close range as well. Most of the time, it helps the strikers pick up a rebound.

I think this is another area in which Thomas Tuchel should work with his boys to improve, because we can't always rely on the defenders to rescue us, like Trevoh Chalobah and Ben Chilwell did against Southampton on Saturday.

If Chelsea must rival Liverpool and Manchester City for the EPL title this season, Thomas Tuchel has to take into consideration these two areas of the midfield, because the midfield is the heart of any football team, and should be well equipped to carry and compliment every other part of the team. Already, Romelu Lukaku's recent run of form of 4 games without a goal still boils down to the midfield and this might affect Chelsea in the long run.
