It is already match day 36 on the line and united has played 35 matches with barely three left. In all, it’s been a disappointing season for the Red Devils who have hoped to be one of the core season contenders this year having squashed a lot of money in the transfer window in the pursuit of High profiled players like Harry Maguire , Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Bruno Fernandes, Ighalo, Daniel James and other hot prospects.
The sacking of Jose Mourinho came at a very important moment for the club as they looked into the market for a replacement. Mauricio Pochettino was already having a strained relationship with his club Tottenham Hotspurs at that moment and was highly considered by Edward Woodward and the Manchester United board but his trophy-less record was a big hinge in making the transfer materialize. Ole Gunnar was appointed as an interim coach and he delivered immediate results with United having a fine rum of season which made the board garner much trust in him and offered him a three years contract which he accepted immediately.
After the signing of the contract, Ole was ready to adopted his Manchester philosophy and bring to limelight again the Ferguson tradition and style of football as against the highly technical but conservative style of football which was already killing the style of play at United. He went on to make top notch signings but that did not come without high expenditure. With all the money expended in trying to organize the squad and balance all positions. Opposition against it seemed a façade. The team seems to be getting worse as they still battle to surpass the 5th position they achieved last season with Liverpool already declared the league champion and Manchester City surpassing all others under them with very strong points, while Chelsea and Leicester City are not ready to sacrifice any point at all.
The reason why Pochettino was not appointed ahead of Ole was because he has no record of winning any silverware and that is one thing that United will not tolerate even though he is a master in playing beautiful and attractive attacking football. With Ole spending so much and being unable to attain anything higher than 5th as the season progresses and falling off as best candidate to win the Europa, it will be easily deduced that it will be a very tough moment for united and Ole, and at the end of the season, Tottenham will soon be forced to look outside for the signature of Pochettino to replace Ole and bring football back again to a more attractive thing at Old Trafford in few weeks time.
