10 Most Expensive Nigerian Players In Transfer History

Nigerian footballers are doing wonderfully well when it comes to international football. These players compete and share the pitch with other top stars around the world.

It is now becoming usual to see top clubs in different league to go to the bank and secure mouth watering deal with the super eagles players, one of such powerful deal is that of the eagles player, Victor Osimhen.

Presently, Osimhen is the most expensive Nigerian player and also the most expensive African player of all time (eclipsing Nicolas Pepe’s Arsenal move).

In this article we will take a look at some other Nigerian football players who are on the list of top expensive players.

1.  Victor Osimhen (Lille to Napoli – €81.3M)

Born: 29 Decmenber 1998.

The 21 year old former Eaglets star comfortably sits as the number 0ne.

Victor Osimhen joined Lille at the start of the 2019/2020 season. He scored 18 goals and was also awarded the club’s Player of the year

 Osimhen was signed on a long awaited deal to Italian Series A club, Napoli few days ago.

2.  Alex Iwobi (Arsenal to Everton – €44M)

Born: 3 May 1996.

He began his career at Arsenal, Iwobi currently plays as winger and forward for premier league club Everton. Iwobi became the most expensive Nigerian at the start of the 2019/2020 season when he swapped Arsenal for Everton. The surprising figure of €44M proved enough for Carlo Ancelotti’s side to get their man. The deal made Iwobi the most expensive Arsenal transfer in history.

3.  Kelechi Iheanacho (Manchester City to Leicester City- €27M)

Born: 12 July 1981

He plays as a forward for premier league club Leicester city. He was part of the Nigeria squad that won the 2013 FIFA U-17 team and the 2015 FIFA U-20 world cup.

Kelechi Iheanacho joined Manchester City in 2015, on the existing victory he secured in the FIFA U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates in 2013, Kelechi Iheanacho secured the move to Manchester City. His impressive and wonderful performance in Manchester city gave him an opportunity to switch to Leicester City in 2017. It took City €27M to make the deal happen.

4. Ademola Lookman (Everton to RB Leipzig- €24.5M)

Born: 20 October 1997

Well you may wonder who is he? Lookman is yet to play for the super eagles.

He is an English professional football who plays for German club RB Leipzig and the England national team.

Ademola Lookman plays for Everton before he secured a heavy deal with RB Leipzig. After being on loan in RB Leipzig the club decided to make the move permanent, resulting into a €24.5M fee. Lookman is on this list as he remains eligible to represent the Super Eagles despite his youth international appearances for England.

4.  Odion Ighalo (Watford to Changchun Yatai- €22M)

Born: 16, June 1989

Odion Ighalo joined Changchun Yatai from Watford in 2017.

Odion Jude Ighalo is a striker for Manchester United and he his currently making history and living his dream at Manchester United. But before then, the retired Eagle made a different kind of history after sealing a €22M move to Chinese Super League club Changchun Yatai from Watford in January 2017.He switched from Changchun Yatai to Shanghai Shenhua in 2019, he is currently on loan in the Manchester United.

6. John Obi Mikel (Lyn Oslo to Chelsea- €20M)

Born: 22 April 1987

John Obi and Ighalo are having the same price tag of €20M.

John Mikel Obi made the move to Chelsea in 2006.

Mikel held the record of the most expensive Nigerian player in 2006 when he moved from Lyn Oslo to Chelsea football club

Mikel became a long serving member of the Blues and tasted both domestic and European success. He has since plied his trade across China, a return to England and Turkey.

7. Ahmed Musa ( CSKA Moscow to Leicester City- €19.5M)

Born 14 October 1992

Ahmed Musa currently play as a forward and left winger for Saudi Arabian team Al-Nassr.

Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa signed a heavy deal in his transfer to Leicester in 2016. €19.5M was used to get the Nigeria player from CSKA Moscow to Leicester City. Musa has since then decided to continue his career in the Arabian league.

8. Wilfred Ndidi (Genk to Leicester City – €17.6M)

Born: 16 December 1996

 Wilfred Ndidi joined Leicester City from Genk where he currently plays as a defensive midfielder.

On 3 December 2016, Genk agreed on a €17.6M transfer deal with Leicester city. Thus, leaving the former Genk player at the eighth spot

9. Yakubu Aiyegbeni (Middleborough to Everton – €16.5M)

While it is almost impossible to separate the name Yakubu Aiyegbeni from that agonizing miss at the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament in South Africa, we can still say that Yakubu is one of the most successful Nigerian players. This can be noted in the heavy money transfer from Middlesbrought to Everton which cost €16.5 .

Yakubu Aiyegbeni retired in 2017.

10. Obafemi Martins (Inter Milan to Newcastle United – €16M)

Obafemi Martins has played almost in all league. The 35 year old has played in Italy, England, Germany, Russia, Spain, the United States of America.

 In 2006, Martins sealed a €16M big money move to Newcastle United from Italian Serie A giants Inter Milan.

Obafemi started his career in Europe as a 16 year old in the year 2000, he has had an enviable career and sits as one of the richest footballers in the nation.
