Man Utd 3 Atalanta 2: Talking Points In UEFA Champions League Match

The atmosphere was in a frenzy after the referee's final whistle in the UEFA Champions league game between Manchester United and Atalanta. It was a sharp contrast to the gloom that enveloped Old Trafford in the first 45 minutes of the game when the visitors were ahead by two goals.

One goal each from the trio of Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo were all Manchester United needed to claim leadership of group F for the first time after three matches.

Talking points following the outcome of the match:

* Manchester United's defence line still a cause to worry about. The two goals scored by Atalanta in the first half were as a result of defensive lapses. And to think this is coming after Leicester exposed the weakness of the backline in the Premier league last week.

* Manchester United's penchant for conceding early goals was once again brought to the limelight. Against Villarreal, it was the same old story and had to rely on a 95th minute effort from Ronaldo to claim victory.

* Manchester United's fans in the Old Trafford stadium no longer in the mood for half measures. While their team trailed the visitors with two goals, they showed their displeasure by booing their team as they made their way to the tunnel at half time.

* Manchester United has a fighting spirit rarely seen among its players. At the resumption of the second half, almost all the players were involved in the search for the elusive goals. It was not therefore surprising when Marcus Rashford drew the curtain early in the second half. Harry Maguire surprisingly followed up with a second to make up for his dismal performance in the first half.

* Cristiano Ronaldo once again proved he couldn't go three matches without scoring a goal. His stunning header not only saved the day for Manchester United, it was his third consecutive UEFA Champions league goals for Manchester United in his second coming.

Cristiano Ronaldo's work rate has been a subject of discussion among pundits and fans prior to the game. Many are of the opinion that he has a low work rate. But against Atalanta, the talisman silenced his critics with his high work rate as he was involved in every department on the field.

* Marcus Rashford's consistency in scoring goals was a feature. With 2 goals in two matches since returning from a long lay off as a result of injury, he is considered an added advantage for Manchester United in subsequent games.
