Takehiro Tomiyasu had more touches (67) and made more ball recoveries (8) than any other Arsenal player against Tottenham on Sunday 26th September, he is yet to be dribbled past by any opponent in the Premier League this season. The Japanese may just be on his way to becoming the best defender in premier league this season and the best transfer in the league.
The 22 year-old has that unique defensive instincts of a centre-back, which solidifies Arsenal’s back 4, and he also has that technical security that gives Arsenal greater ball progression into the final third. He is indeed the ideal tactical fit for that inverted right-back role. Unfortunately, his abilities and workrate does not get the right amount of attention it deserves.
So far in the premier league, he has already contested 16 aerial duels and won 14 aerial duels, he plays like he already has many years of premier league experience. His additional size and physicality, really helps neutralise aerial threats, he has been superb in all the games he has appeared in and if he maintains fitness and this trajectory, he is going to end up as one of the best players in the league.
