8 Most Expensive Goalkeepers in Premier League History.

The Premier League as you know is the most entertaining club league competition in football. It is home to some of the richest football clubs in the world. These clubs have the finances to sign some of the best players for hefty transfer fees. The good news is that while they are signing outfield players for high prices, they didn't leave out goalkeepers too.

The league has been graced by some of the best pair of hands in the form of Goalkeepers. Peter Cech who holds the Premier League record for the most clean sheets in a season is one. Edwin Van Dar Sar who has the record for the longest clean sheets run with 14 is another.

There's also Peter Shmicheal who is the only goalkeeper to have won the player of the year, and the first keeper to score a goal in Premier League history. He is arguably the best goalkeeper in the league's history.

In my opinion, goalkeepers are often underated and underappreciated for the roles they play in a team. It is only in recent times that coaches have begin to utilize them in the build up to thier team's play. This has made their roles more important as it goes beyond just preventing opponents from scoring.

This has prompted clubs to splash the cash on goalkeepers who are good at keeping the ball on their feet. With the amount of wealth Premier League clubs have, a team from the English game has the most expensive goalkeeper in world football.

In this article, we will take a look at the list of the 8 most expensive goalkeepers in Premier League history.

8. Claudio Bravo.

First on this list is former Manchester City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo. He was signed from Barcelona in 2016 for a fee of 15.4 million pounds. Although, it didn't take long for the Sky Blues to purchase more reliable and expensive goalkeeper, his deal is one of the most expensive in Premier League history.

7. David De Gea.

During the transfer window in 2011, Mancheser United signed a young goalkeeper from the Spanish La Liga. When the deal was completed, De Gea became the most expensive goalkeeper in Premier League history at the time.

The current Manchester United number one was signed for 18.9 million pounds from Atletico Madrid in that year.

At the time, the club were looking to sign a goalkeeper who would solve their goalkeeping issues after the retirement of Edwin Van Dar Sar. Considering how important he has been down the years, we can conclude that it was a great piece of business.

6. Leno.

In June 2018, Arsenal signed German goalkeeper Bernd Leno for 22.5 million pounds. The keeper was signed from Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen. At the moment, he is the 6th most expensive goalkeeper in Premier League history.

5. Edouard Mendy 25 million.

After the series of errors were committed by the world's most expensive goalkeeper at Chelsea, the club decided to look elsewhere for solution. At the moment, it appears that they did just that.

Senegalese goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy was signed from for a fee of 25 million pounds in 2020. The then blues manager Frank Lampard referred to his deal as "low maintenance goalkeeper".

4. Pickford.

In June 2017, Everton broke their own club record to sign a goalkeeper. They signed Jordan Pickford from Sunderland for a fee of 25 million pound. The English international is now the Three Lions first choice goalkeeper at the ongoing Euro tournament.

3. Ederson.

In the 2017/2018 season, Manchester City paid a record Premier League fee to sign Ederson from portuguese side SL Benfica. The Brazilian goalkeeper, a 23 year old at the time, was chosen by Pep to succeed Claudio Bravo at Manchester City.

To get their man, Manchester City paid a whooping 35 million pounds to the portuguese side. At the time, it eclipsed the fee Everton paid for the purchase of Jordan Pickford from Sunderland. As at today, he is the third most expensive goalkeeper in Premier League history.

2. Alison Becker.

Liverpool officially announced the signing of Alison Becker from Roma on July 19, 2018. The Brazilian goalkeeper was identified as the ideal goalkeeper after the high profile errors committed by Karius in the 2018 Champions League final.

To get the Brazilian, Liverpool paid a then world record fee of 66.8 million pounds. It replaced the fee paid for Ederson by Manchester City as the highest transfer fee paid by any Premier League club in history.

1. Kepa Arrizabalaga.

At the moment, the most expensive goalkeeper in the history of the Premier League is a Chelsea goalkeeper. The Blues under Maurizio Sarri paid a world record 71 million pounds to Athletic Bilbao for the services of Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Therefore, he is not just the most expensive goalkeeper in the Premier League, he is the most expensive goalkeeper in football's history. At the time that their deal was completed, he replaced Liverpool's Alison Becker as the world's most expensive goalkeeper in August 2018.

At the moment though, Kepa Arrizabalaga is not the first choice goalkeeper at Chelsea. He has lost this spot to Edouard Mendy, following series of high profile errors and bad performances.

Which of these goalkeepers do you think deserve the fee paid for them? Which of them do you think is not worth the amount spent on them?
