Tuchel admits he ‘fell into a trap’ by commenting on Chelsea interest in Haaland.

After recently stoking rumours over Chelsea's interest in Erling Haaland, Thomas Tuchel has admitted he 'fallen into a trap' by speaking on the Norwegian ace.

The Borussia Dortmund striker's future continues to dominate transfer rumours, with the possibility that he will make a high-profile move next summer, with a rumoured £68 million release clause scheduled to kick in at the end of the season.

That 'bargain' contract for a player who has 70 goals in 69 appearances for the German club is sure to ignite a mad scramble for his signature among Europe's elite teams, with a number of clubs across the continent and in the Premier League said to be interested.

Chelsea is one of the clubs said to be interested, with the European champions having tried to sign the striker before spending £97.5 million to bring Romelu Lukaku back to the club this summer.

Tuchel, the current Blues manager, added fuel to the fire by revealing that the club had discussed a possible deal for the 21-year-old during the last transfer window, which he revealed to German publication Bild after receiving their Trainer of the Year award.

He told Bild, "We talked about Erling Haaland a couple of times, including during the transfer window." "However, it looked completely ridiculous and implausible at the time.

"Of course, we talk about him on a regular basis because he's a wonderful player and certainly the defining character at Dortmund, who is a major adversary in the Champions League for us."

He was then asked if Chelsea could still make a move given their recent signing of Lukaku, and he joked: “You mean two at the top [with] Lukaku and Haaland? We can talk about it!”

Speaking ahead of today’s game against Norwich, Tuchel was asked about those comments, and he conceded he ‘fell into a trap’ and insisted his comments about a Lukaku-Haaland pairing were a ‘joke’.

“I fell into a trap,” Tuchel said. “I got an award in Germany, an award from a newspaper. They gave me this award and asked me about a player.

“Normally I never, never speak about other players, because I simply never do. We were making more or less fun about it and I should have known better.

“Because in making fun about it and being a nice guy to answer a question … getting this award I joke about a double striker with Romelu [Lukaku] in October and it gets like we put an offer in. That was the context, but I should have known better.”
