Premier League

One mistake Manchester United made in the transfer window has come back to haunt them.

Manchester United did make some improvements last season, finishing second in the EPL league and runners-up in the Europa Cup, losing to Villarreal in the finals.

However, they failed to learn from their mistakes from last season and made the required adjustments, which has come back to haunt them this season. What mistakes did Manchester United make in the summer window that are still haunting them?

Manchester United did make some quality additions to their squad during the transfer window. They signed Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, and Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus, bolstering their attack. However, they failed to reinforce one area of their squad that they should have strengthened: the central midfield position.

The issue is that Fred and Scott McTominay, who play in the centre midfield position, have been on and off this season and have exhibited major signs of burn-out since the beginning of the season. Paul Pogba is another player who could have fit into that role brilliantly, but we've seen that he, too, has cooled off after a hot start to the season. Manchester United strengthened the midfield during the transfer window. It would have come in handy now that the team is suffering the effects of Cristiano Ronaldo not having to drop deep to assist in the midfield.

Manchester United would have benefited greatly from the addition of a world-class midfielder.

Truth be told, the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo in the lineup did, in fact, create a very big space in the centre midfield position, which Leicester City exploited to the detriment of Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba on Sunday.

In the end, not only were Pogba and Matic outrun in the midfield, but Manchester United were also thrashed 4-2.

In my opinion, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a mistake by not reinforcing the central midfield position, and it has come back to haunt Manchester United in their last few games, as opponents have too many holes in the middle to exploit.

If Ole Solskjaer has the opportunity to strengthen in the January transfer window, he should find a way to reinforce the central midfield position. Otherwise, other teams will continue to exploit the huge spaces created by the current Manchester United setup. And it could cost Ole Solskjaer his job.
