Rio Ferdinand and 5 Other Outfield Players Who Became Goalkeepers Out of Necessity

In a situation whereby a goalkeeper is injured or sent off and the team has used up all their substitutes, or there is no substitute goalkeeper on the bench, an outfield player has to assume the role of a goalkeeper. We have seen this scenario play out a number of times. So we will be looking at 11 outfield players, who became goalkeepers out of necessity.

1. John Terry (Chelsea vs Reading)

Chelsea had a match with Reading in the Premier League in the year 2006. Chelsea goalkeeper Peter Cech was substituted after he suffered an I just. His replacement Cudicini was also injured moments after coming on.

Chelsea defender John Terry had to play the role of an emergency goalkeeper for the last minutes of the game. It ended 1-0 in favour of Chelsea.

2. Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United vs Portsmouth)

Manchester United were up against Portsmouth in the FA cup. During the break, Man United second-choice Kuszczak was brought in to replace Edwin Van Der Sar. But unfortunately, Kuszczak was sent off and Rio Ferdinand had to take up the gloves. However, Portsmouth dumped Man United out of the competition after Sulley Muntari beat Ferdinand with his strike from the penalty box.

3. Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur vs Asteras Tripolis):

Hugo Lloris was shown a red card in a Europa League encounter between Tottenham Hotspurs and Asteras Tripolis. Harry Kane had to take up the position. But he was beaten by the resulting freekick, as he fumbled with the ball, which went past him into the goal net.

4. John O'Shea (Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur):

O'Shea looked so confident that you may have thought he was actually a natural goalkeeper. Van Der Sar got injured in a match between Man United and Tottenham Hotspurs. O'Shea had to replace the injured goalkeeper and he provided a fine performance, as the match ended 4-0 in favour of Man United.

5. Dani Alves (Paris Saint Germain vs Sochaux)

PSG beat Sochaux 4-1 in the French Cup. However, one talking point in the game was the moment when Dani Alves had to become an emergency goalkeeper, after Kevin Trapp was sent off

6. Kyle Walker (Manchester City vs Atalanta):

Manchester City and Atalanta played 1-1 in this thrilling UCL groupstage encounter. City goalkeeper Ederson got injured and Claudio Bravo was brought in to replace him in the second half.

Moments later, Bravo was sent off for his 'indisciplined' tackle on an Atalanta player by name Joseph Ilicic. City defender Kyle Walker had to assume goalkeeper responsibilities.
