3 years after winning their last La Liga title in 2017, Sergio Ramos and Real Madrid lifted their 34th La Liga title at the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium after beating Villarreal 2-1 on the night.
Real Madrid were behind Barcelona in the standings as La Liga returned in June but a run of 10 wins from 10 games saw them overtake Barcelona who drew 3 and won 6 before losing to 10-men Osasuna on Thursday night.
Coming into the game against Villarreal, Real Madrid were 4 points ahead of Barcelona and with 2 games remaining, Zidane and his men knew that a win will be enough to secure the title for them, even if Barcelona wins Osasuna in their own match at the Camp Nou.
Speaking of Barcelona winning, they didn't. While Madrid was leading Villarreal 1-0 at half-time through a Benzema goal, they were losing to Osasuna 1-0 at half-time.
Messi equalised in the second half from a direct free kick, but it seems they heard the news that Madrid was winning as they ended up conceding a late goal even though they were then playing against 10-men.
Messi disappointed as Barca lost to Osasuna.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid made it 2-0 in the second half after Benzema converted from the penalty spot, a late goal from Villarreal proved to be just a consolation.
After the final whistle at the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium, there was plenty of celebration as Sergio Ramos lifted the La Liga title for Real Madrid, confirming them the 2019/2020 La Liga champions.
