UCL Q/F: 3 things to expect in the UCL last eight, without Ronaldo and Messi.

The UEFA champions league quarter final first leg matches will be played this week, and the first time in 15years, it will be played without Ronaldo and Messi in the competition.

Without doubt, it will be strange not seeing these two football greats at this stage of the competition having been ever present in time past, however in their absence, their things to be expecting in the competition, which will be discussed in this article.


How did they fare the last time they made it to this stage?

Last season was the last time Messi and Ronaldo last played in the champions league last eight. The competition was played at a later date, due to the outbreak of covid-19, Messi inspired Barcelona to a 3-1 win against Napoli in the round of 16, having drawn the first leg prior to the suspension of all footballing actions all over the world.

Juventus and Ronaldo on the other hand failed to make it to the quarter final stage last season, after being knocked out by Lyon on away goal rule, despite seeing Ronaldo scoring two goals to give Juventus a 2-1 win.


The quarter final stage was played on a neutral ground in Portugal, and was played as a single leg. It was the best outing for Lionel Messi and Barcelona as they were thrashed 8-2 by eventual winner Bayern Munich, which led to Messi handling in a transfer request to leave Barcelona.

What are the things to be expecting without Messi and Ronaldo.

1. Lesser viewing.

Without doubt both Ronaldo and Messi have a lot of followers all over the world, and their presence in any competition will mean that people will like to see them in action. Serie A league was not been televized on DSTV before, but that changed when Ronaldo joined Juventus. The absence of Ronaldo and Messi in this year last 8 could also mean that people will not be interested in watching.


2. New stars arising.

The first thing to cross people's mind when Barcelona and Juventus were knocked out of this year UCL is that, and era is coming to an end,with new stars emerging. This quarter final stage is expected to be the birth of new stars as the likes of Mbappe and Haaland, who have both got good numbers in their champions league career, are expected to shone for their respective clubs.


3. Porto could be this year's surprise package.

The Portuguese side eliminated Ronaldo's Juventus in the round of 16 stage of the competition, in an impressive fashion. They won't be frightened by premier league side, Chelsea, having watched them being blown away by relegation threatened side, West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Should they eliminate Chelsea, confidence will be high in their camp, and they won't fear facing anyone in the competition.
