The Formation That Could Help Super Eagles Defeat Liberia At World Cup Qualifiers

Super Eagles boss Gernot Rohr is committed to a four-man defence back in the autumn, tweaking the 4-3-3 system which had been successfully employed through a comfortable AFCON qualification campaign.

The Nigeria manager is now convinced a variation of 4-4-1-1 or 4-4-2 is the best way to eke performances and possession from his talented squad against Liberia on Matchday 1 of the World Cup Qualifiers.

Eagles squad has players who can adapt to any formation, but if they play four at the back, it would mean just two defensive midfielders will make the cut in the 11.

So, Oghenekaro Etebo and Wilfred Ndidi will be the preferred pick, meaning no place for Innocent Bonke and Kingsley Michael.

How could they line up:

Maduka Okoye

Having been given the number 1 jersey, Okoye will start ahead of Daniel Akpeyi and Francis Uzoho.

Ola Aina

Aina still made the squad and looks set to start at the World Cup Qualifiers.

Leon Balogun

Nigeria's best ball playing defender, he will be a key at the heart of the defence.

William Troost-Ekong

One of the most experienced players in the Eagles squad, he will be tasked with bringing composure to the defence.

Zaidu Sanusi

He has been one of the best left-backs in Africs over the last couple of months. The ex Santa Clara star will start.

Oghenekaro Etebo

Having been one of the best performers in the win over Lesotho, he has worked himself into reckoning and now looks set to start on Friday.

Wilfred Ndidi

He is the first choice, and is a sure shot starter at the base of the midfield.

Kelechi Iheanacho

Iheanacho will be an important player for the Eagles, and will be tasked with finding spaces and making those dangerous runs in the box.

Ahmed Musa

A player who has the nag for scoring some wonderful goals, the skipper will play from the left flank.

Moses Simon

Simon will be key to Nigeria unlocking Lone Stars' backline. He was outstanding for Nantes before the international break. The player will be tasked with scoring and setting up goals.

Victor Osimhen

Osimhen will be the most important player for the three-time African champions. He can score goals from nowhere and anywhere. He is lethal and loves scoring goals.

Bench: Daniel Akpeyi, Francis Uzoho, Shehu Abdullahi, Kenneth Omeruo, Chidozie Awaziem, Semi Ajayi, Tyrone Ebuehi, Jamilu Collins, Paul Onuachu, Henry Onyekuru, Chidera Ejuke, Alex Iwobi

They can even switch to a conventional 4-3-3, if need be.
