Meet The First Nigerian and Only African to Own a Football Club in Europe.

Recently, Newcastle football club of England has been another football club snapped up by wealthy billionaires from the middle east and this reminds us of other clubs the European football has witnessed being bought by billionaire owners. Clubs such as Chelsea, Monaco, PSG and Manchester City have all been purchased by private owners or a consortium who in turn invested heavily in the clubs- not forgetting Leicester City. Even though acquisitions have been made not just at the top end of the football chain but also in lower divisions, the common trend is that most of the investment came from Asia and Europe- until now. Nigerian businessman Kunle Soname has become the first Nigerian to won majority shares in an European football club after concluding negotiations to acquire Portuguese second division side, Clube Desportivo Feirense (Although the played in the Portuguese top Liga last season, finishing 18th and thus, relegated to the second tier).

Kunle Soname is a Nigerian politician, entrepreneur, sport enthusiast and a business mogul- of Yoruba descent. He is married to Kemi Soname and they have a daughter Erioluwa. He studied Political Science at the Lagos State University where he graduated in 1996. He ventured into politics in 2003 and was elected as the Executive Chairman of Ikosi-Isheri Local Council, a post he held till 2011.

Soname who is also the chairman of a popular online gaming corporation, Bet9ja is also the proprietor of of a Nigerian Professional League football club, Remo Stars. Remo Stars Football Club previously known as FC DENDER was founded by Soname in 2004. The club was then relocated from Lagos State to Remo area of Ogun State, and is now playing in the Nigerian Premier League's Top Division.

"I founded Bet9ja and Remo Stars FC to tackle crime and violence.," the business mogul told the National Daily Newspaper.

His purchase of Clube Desportivo Feirense took place in 2015 and the purchase was confirmed through an official statement from the club. "We have effected a transformation of our club through the sale of part of the capital to our new partners, Tavisstock Global Resources Ltd, led by Mr. Kunle Soname."

Soname said the takeover was the next step as he grows in the business. "Securing Clube Desportivo Feirense was the next step in the right direction for me. I love everything about the club: the organisation, the philosophy and the fans. I have no intention of changing anything in the club because I am satisfied with their operations. Rather, I want to ensure the progress of the club through promotion to the Portuguese Primera division." He sure did made sure the club promoted to the Portuguese Primera Division- at least until they were relegated at the end of he 2018/19 season.

He also stressed that his experience in the Nigerian business space will help grow his new Portuguese club. Soname also promised to create a viable working relationship between Remo Stars and Clube Desportivo Feirense.

"Having been involved in Nigerian football over the years by running Remo Stars Football club, I felt it was time to further develop the team. It would also bring benefits for Nigerian football through players transfer, training for officials and administrators, who have proven they have what it takes to succeed in Europe." Just like he stated, over the years, two Remo Stars players signed for the Portuguese stars.

I pray for him and his club to get back up to the top tier and continue to grow as well. Do you feel happy for him, if his club happen to play your favorite team in Europe would you support him or your club. State your opionion in the comment section below.
