Opinion: Why Arsenal Fans Should Not Praise Willian Borges For Choosing To Terminate His Contract

Arsenal won the Carabao cup match against West Bromwich Albion with a 6-0 scoreline. Having lost the first two games of the Premier League season to Brentford FC and Chelsea with 2-0 scorelines, Arsenal were desperate to win against West Bromwich Albion and it showed in the strong line-up Mikel Arteta named for the match.

Currently, Arsenal is in a rebuilding process and has had a slow start to the new season, the Gunners are releasing underperforming players who will most likely be replaced before the end of the transfer window.

Willian Borges is among the players Arsenal is looking to move away from the club. The Brazilian winger was signed on a free transfer from Chelsea last summer. He declined a two-year contract extension with Chelsea and made the move across London to the Emirates stadium.

So far, Arsenal has signed Nuno Tavares, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Ben White, Martin Odegaard and Aaron Ramsdale for a combined fee of about 130 million pounds. To compete for the top four positions next season, Arsenal still needs to sign a central midfielder, a right-back and a striker before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

News emerged that Arsenal and Willian Borges had come to an agreement on the termination of his contract which still runs till 2023. Many fans are happy and grateful that Willian decided to terminate his contract and leave the club, but I think Willian shouldn't be praised for that decision and here is my reason why.

Willian Borges was signed to be an experienced member of the squad. Part of the plan for his signing was to guide the youngsters at the club like Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Folarin Balogun and fellow countrymen Gabriel Martinelli, and Gabriel Magalhaes.

Truly Willian's first season wasn't very good but quitting by cancelling his contract sends a wrong message to the aforementioned youngsters. Willian should be showing them how to get better by working harder and not just quitting because things aren't going well.

When David Luiz arrived at Arsenal, he was doubted by the fanbase. He committed many errors and gave away penalties very often. But he didn't quit, he got down to work and made sure he won the fans over before departing this summer.

I think David Luiz was more of a leader than Willian and the fans shouldn't praise him (Willian) for terminating his contract.
