In Football, each Player has their designated position and role that is entrusted to their care by their Manager. Apart from the conventional positions like the Forward, Midfield and Defense, there are other roles that the Manager or Coach of a team would have discussed with their Player. For example, defending against setpiece.
To defend against setpiece, regardless of the role of the Players, they have to come together. The tall Players will obviously form the wall while ones among them with average height might defend against the remaining opposition Players or even form a dwarf wall.
There are also some Players that are versatile in their role. We have some Midfielders like Kevin De Bruyne that Pep Guardiola has used at the Midfield, front wings and Central Forward. There are also some Players capable of playing as Centre-back and defensive Midfielder.
While it's easier to transition into some of these roles because of the similarities, there are some times that Players had to played in a position that's totally out of their job description. We'll go over a few names of outfield Players that has filled in as Goalkeeper for their team.
1. John Terry
The England international stepped in as Chelsea Goalkeeper in 2006. Terry, who's Chelsea's most successful Captain and a Central Defender, volunteered to man the goalpost for Chelsea in a League game against Reading after Chelsea's Goalkeepers Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini were both Injured in the game.
2. Kyle Walker
Pep Guardiola turned to Kyle Walker in 2019 to save Manchester City in a Champions League Match against Atalanta away in Italy. Ederson was forced off in the game after he picked up an Injury.
Claudio Bravo who replaced Ederson as second choice Goalkeeper was sent off in the game. Walker came off the bench in the game and was the reason that Manchester City walked away with a point as he made two saves in the game.
3. Rio Ferdinand
Rio Ferdinand had a successful 12 years at the Old Trafford playing as a Central Back. However, he had to stand in as a Goalkeeper in 2008 in an Emirate FA Cup clash against Portsmouth. Manchester United Goalkeeper in the game Tomasz Kuszczak was sent off for a rash tackle on a Portsmouth Striker.
4. John O'Shea
The Former Manchester United Star came off the Bench to man the goalpost for the Red Devils in 2007 in a league game against Tottenham Hotspurs. Edwin Van Der Sar was removed in the game during the second half after he suffered a broken nose. Manchester United ended up winning the match by 4-0.
