The Italian defender spoke about the effect of his former Juventus teammates some weeks ago, a bitter truth that didn't go down well with many people. This season, Ronaldo has been the standout player for United in a rather frustrating campaign for the club. His Nine goals in all competition are at least four more than anyone else in the United squad.
In fact, many people have even said Ronaldo has been the one saving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's job. Despite all these, we will observe what Leonardo Bonucci about Ronaldo some time ago and how it has surfaced again at United, which means the Portuguese has had some negative impacts on the club despite his incredible goal record.
Cristiano Ronaldo left Juventus in the summer to rejoin Manchester United and upon his departure, Leonardo Bonucci disclose to the Athletic what really happened with Ronaldo in their team. The Italy defender was quoted saying, “Ronaldo's presence had a big influence on us. Just training with him gave us something extra, but subconsciously, players started to think his presence alone was enough to win games. We began to fall a little short in our daily work, the humility, the sacrifice, the desire to be there for your teammates day after day. Over the last few years, I think you could see that.”
Looking at his words, no one can deny the positive influence Ronaldo can have on a team and how his presence can help others to perform better, but his presence on the other hand do make others feel inferior and might want to step back and allow him to do things his ways. One fact that anyone associated with United can't deny is that with Ronaldo, they believe they have won everything. In fact, United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, said after the club signed Ronaldo that with him, they are guaranteed at least a goal in a match.
However, all these words has brought about a sense of over reliance on the Portuguese striker, which subsequently is affecting the team. Since Ronaldo joined United, the goal scoring rate of Bruno Fernandes has dropped, the likes of Mason Greenwood, Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial's form have suffered, all because the team want to rely on Ronaldo. One thing we dare not do is to belittle Ronaldo's impact, but according to Bonucci, he is indirectly creating some negative impacts at the club.
They might not know now, but one certain thing is that, Ronaldo won't be around for long and when he is gone, then, they will realize they can hardly win games without him. Maybe Solskjaer can learn now and create a system that allows the club to flourish even without Ronaldo, or else, the club might suffer when he is gone.
Even now, if United wants to achieve anything with Ronaldo in the team, there's a need for everyone in the team to assume responsibility because as said by Bonucci that, “Ronaldo needed the team as much as we needed him. There had to be a trade-off because it's the team that lifts the individual even if the individual is the best player on the planet.”
As important as these words are, it remains to be seen if anyone among the United coaches can read into this and make use of it, but the truth remains that Cristiano Ronaldo has had some negative impacts on the team despite his incredible goal record and that is because the whole squad are seeing him as a savior and not just a teammate.
