Real Madrid lost to Sheriff Tiraspol at Santiago Bernabeu in today's Champions League fixture. Sheriff Tiraspol went above Real Madrid as they topped the group D table. Real Madrid were responsible for their own loss in today's match. Here's the only reason why Real Madrid lost today.
Carlos Ancelloti's Failed Tactics
Carlos Ancelloti underrestimated Sheriff Tiraspol in today's match by resting his best squad for today's occasion. Eden Hazard haven't been at his very best this season and needed to be rested today. He had players like Marcos Asensio and Isco on the bench but didn't start with them.
Carlo Ancelotti had Toni Kroos and Luka Modric on the bench but waited till the final minutes of the second half before he brought them in. These are players that could charge the flow of the game. Camavinga and Valverde wouldn't get the job done he needed Luka Modric or Toni Kroos controlling play in the midfield position.
Real Madrid failed to score from open play against Sheriff Tiraspol, Karim Benzema scored from the penalty spot as they equalized in the second half. Sheriff Tiraspol got back into the lead in the final minutes of the second half and got away with all three points.
It wasn't the performance most Real Madrid fans would have anticipated for. Real Madrid were dominance, they had better chances of scoring in the match but couldn't make it count. Sheriff Tiraspol saw fewer of the ball possessions but scored from the big chances they had in the match.
