Michael Owen reveals why he’s happy for Timo Werner

Timo Werner was a prolific striker for RB Leipzig, but he hasn't been able to replicate that success at Chelsea.

After the arrival of Romelu Lukaku, he played a crucial part in the squad last season, but his lack of goals has lost him a spot this season.

In the game against Southampton, Werner had some bad luck. He had a clear goal called off for a foul in the build-up to the goal in the first half, but he scored his first goal of the season late in the game as Chelsea beat Southampton 3-1.

Former Liverpool and Newcastle United striker Michael Owen has expressed his delight that Werner has finally scored.

Owen told Premier League Productions, "As an ex-striker, I know how he feels when it simply doesn't go in, and he's been experiencing this for some time now."

“It's hard to comprehend how much he's suffering in front of goal when you look at his goalscoring record throughout his career.

“I believed there was nothing wrong with his first goal, but then they brought it back so far that I thought, ‘wow, everything is against you.'

“This [the second goal] is a beautiful play, great ball by [Ross Barkley], even better ball by Azpilicueta, and it's an easy finish for him, but it's nice to see him going in those positions and getting the monkey off his back.”
