2 Reasons Edouard Mendy Standouts Among The Goalkeepers In Europe

Undoubtedly, football defenders primary role is to stop the attackers of the opposing team from scoring goals. But in the case whereby the attackers outsmart the defenders, the goalkeeper is standing in the goal post to prevent the ball from scoring. This shows that the impact of goalkeepers on the football field cannot be overemphasized.

Kepa Arrizabalaga was signed by Chelsea FC from Athletic Bilbao with a transfer fee of over seventy-one million pounds (£71.6m) and became the most expensive goalkeeper in the history of football. Unfortunately, he struggled to find his form which led him to be relegated to the bench in favour of Willy Caballero. But Chelsea FC proceeded to signed Edouard Mendy from Rennes in the region of twenty-two million pounds (£22m).

Senegalese international and Chelsea FC goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy since joining the club has been massively impressive. His performance for the Blues has been excellent and top-notch. On several occasions, he has single-handedly saved Chelsea FC from losing a game. This earned him to win the UEFA Men's Best Goalkeeper of the Year.

Aside from the fact that Chelsea FC defence has been solid, here are two (2) major reasons why he standout among other goalkeepers.

First of all, goalkeepers are expected to gain tactical awareness and knowledge of the game. Most goalkeepers lack composure in the goal post and by this, they are not able to see crosses from a distance or an angle and they eventually result in making mistakes, which then leads to a goal. But Edouard Mendy is exceptional when it comes to cross collecting and composure in the goal post.

Likewise, he manages his goalpost area very well. The ability to communicate adequately with Chelsea FC defenders helps him to avoid making a mistake and enables him to stop shot easily. The reason he broke a record in the UEFA Champions League last season. Edouard Mendy’s nine (9) clean sheets for Chelsea FC in the UEFA Champions League last season was the most ever by a goalkeeper in their debut campaign in the competition.
