Manchester United could pay around €153,000-a-week if they manage to sign Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni this summer, Inter Live report.
With Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire serving as backups, the Red Devils' usual center backs right now are Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.
This season, Luke Shaw has also played frequently from the left center-back position, although manager Erik ten Hag might yet have intentions to bolster the group.
Maguire has long been rumored to be leaving Old Trafford. His resignation this summer may open the door for the recruitment of a young successor.
Bastoni would be a viable alternative for the Red Devils if his contract dispute with Inter lasts until the end of the summer transfer season, claims Inter Live.
According to reports, Inter are willing to offer the center-back a new contract of €4.5 million plus bonuses in addition to his existing yearly wage of €2.7 million (or €4 million with add-ons).
His agent is negotiating for $6 million, though. If a solution is not found, the source asserts that United will issue a "concrete threat" to Inter about the Italy international.
The Red Devils might be willing to spend up to €8 million a year, or €153,000 every week.
Martinez would have quality opposition from Bastoni.
The 23-year-profession old's is as a left-footed center-back. Shaw has done an excellent job of covering Martinez this year, but Ten Hag could want an all-natural Argentine to take Martinez's position.
With his strong defensive qualities, Bastoni would be an excellent addition. The Italian has roughly two tackles while winning an incredible four duels per game this season.
Also, he has made five significant chances while completing 86% of his passes. If Bastoni were to join the team, we believe he might be played in a regular rotation with Martinez.
If Inter can't persuade the center-back to extend his contract before it expires next summer, he could be pried away for a bargain price. His current Transfermarkt value is €55 million.
