Is Athletico Madrid the right place for Antoine Griezmann?

Barcelona fans were excited when it was announced that Antoine Griezmann will be leaving Barcelona to return to Atletico Madrid, but Atletico Madrid fans were not happy to see him arrive either. The World Cup winner has been disappointing to the extent that no club wants him in their team. However, Diego Simeone still thinks otherwise.

Since joining Athletico, the Frenchman has played 305 minutes in five games and has failed to register a single shot on target, let alone a goal, and also yet to record an assist before scoring in the Champions League against Milan. For the goal, he was well received by his teammates and received praises.

Although, the France international was crucial in their 2-1 win over AC Milan in the Champions League at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. Griezmann scored his first ever goal for the Wanda Metropolitano side since returning from Barcelona in the summer. This is his best display for the Los Rojiblancos this season and could be the time to ease back into the team.

However, It’s clear that his arrival was not producing any good results rather than poor one. In his 305 minutes on the field, Atletico Madrid have failed to score while in the 415 minutes played without him this campaign, they have scored nine goals. While last season’s title winning was thanks to the pace and energy of Yannick Carrasco and Marcos Llorente driving from wide positions to produce a quick transition, Griezmann’s arrival has put a stop to that.

Also, his arrival has seen Diego Simeone drop Angel Correa for him despite the Argentina international starting the season in fine form with three goals and an assist in his first three appearances of the campaign. Time after time, he drops on the right, interrupting the strong connection between Kieran Trippier and Llorente.

In sum, after getting the needed results following Griezmann’s substitution twice, Simeone seems to be regretting his decision of bringing in the 30-year-old because it didn’t work out as he may have hoped. However, his strike against the Rossoneri could be the first step in repaying the faith that the Athleti coach had in him.
