Winning the Golden Boot as a player, shows that you scored more league goals than another on-filed player. Most times, the award is shared if more than one player attains same number of goals in a single league season.
The Premier League Golden boot is an annually presented award, as winners are usually given £1000 for every goal they scored throughout the season to donate to any charity of their choice. The Golden Boot award started when English Premier League (EPL) was founded in 1992.
So far, only 21 players in the history of Golden Boots have won the prestigious award, with some top strikers missing out from the list.
Here are the names of the 21 players to have won an EPL Golden Boot since the 1992 season;
Teddy Sheringham, Andy Cole, Alan Shearer, Chris Sutton, Dion Dublin, Michael Owen, Dwight Yorke, Jimmy Floyd, Kevin Phillips, Thierry Henry, Didier Drogba, Carlos Tevez, Dimitar Berbatov, Robin Van Persie, Luis Suarez, Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah, Pierre-Emarick Aubameyang, Sadio Mane and Jamie Vardy.
Here are the list of top 5 strikers to have failed to win an EPL Golden Boot;
1. Wayne Rooney:
Seen as one of the most decorated English player in history, Rooney has never won an EPL Golden Boot award. Rooney who scored over 200 goals in the Premier League, was unfortunate that he could not be crowned top sorcerer in England even when he scored 25 league goals on two different occasions.
2. Robbie Fowler:
A natural goal scorer, and considered as one of the best strikers to have ever worn the red jersey for Liverpool. He was referred to as a “god” by his fans and ranked 6 in the all-time top scoring players, but was also unfortunate not to have won the Golden Boots, during the peak of his career in the 90’s.
3. Fernando Torres:
The Spanish player who took the Premiere League by storm, was one of the best players in the world after his goal-scoring prolific for Liverpool during the 2007-2008 season. He was also nominated for FIFA World Player of the Year Awards in 2008. Torres holds the record of the fastest player to reach 50 goals for Liverpool. With all his abilities and hype, Torres, was unfortunate not to have won an EPL Golden Boot award.
4. Romelu Lukaku:
Seen as the hare to Didier Drogba’s throne when he was signed by Chelsea, Lukaku failed to establish himself at Chelsea, as the Belgian was sold to Everton, before he was snapped by Manchester United. Lukaku had all the abilities and qualities of a modern day striker but only came close to winning the Golden Boots in the 2016-2017 season, when he came second before Tottenham’s Harry Kane.
5. Dennis Bergkamp:
Regarded as one of the best strikers of his generation, Bergkamp spent majority of his playing career at Arsenal, as he won several team titles. According to BBC poll in 2017, it was recorded that Bergkamp scored one of the best goal of the Premier League era, as his elegant touch and techniques were topnotch.
