Erling Haaland nets double on comeback as Borussia Dortmund go top of Bundesliga

Borussia Dortmund beat Mainz 3-1 on Saturday to go top of the Bundesliga. Erling Haaland scored two goals in his return from injury.

Haaland, a thigh problem kept him out of Dortmund's last four games in all competitions, but he returned against Mainz to score his third brace in as many games and bring his season total to nine league goals.

Dortmund coach Marco Rose remarked, "Erling truly wanted to play and he gave everything to be on the pitch today."

"We missed him terribly, and it's fantastic that he scored two goals. That's why he signed him up in the first place "Marco Reus, the captain, contributed his two cents.

Dortmund now leads the Bundesliga table, ahead of Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen, who meet on Sunday.

Dortmund took the lead on three minutes when Reus hammered a magnificent half-volley into the top corner, then Haaland coolly converted a penalty to double the lead after the break.

Late on, Jonathan Burkardt gave Mainz hope, but Haaland added a second in injury time to seal the victory and keep Dortmund's spotless home record intact this season.

Fellow contenders for the top four RB Leipzig fell farther behind the leaders after a 1-1 draw at home to unbeaten Freiburg.
