Ben Chilwell and Marcos Alonso are the two current Chelsea left-backs. Under Lampard, Chelsea signed Ben Chilwell from Leicester City for €50 million after several attempts. The England international was a regular starter under Lampard in a 4-3-3 formation but started switching places with Alonso after Tuchel became the Chelsea manager. Alonso fits in more in Thomas Tuchel's 4-3-3 formation.
Many Chelsea fans believed that Alonso is better in the attack than Ben Chilwell so therefore he should be a regular starter than Chilwell. Here are the reasons why Chilwell should be starting ahead of Alonso.1. Speed: Chilwell is way faster than Alonso and recovers quickly when the opponent launches a counterattack. Alonso cannot recover the way Chilwell does, always leaving Rudiger to do his(Alonso) job in the defense line. Also, when Chelsea launches a counter-attack which is Tuchel's current playing style, speed is needed to get a goal before the opponent returns to their defensive position. This is what Alonso lacks(speed) because he tends to slow down the attack which allows the opponent to defend. Tuchel needs Chilwell on the left-wing position if he is to continue with his counter-attacking football style.
2. Strength and Physicality: The England Premier League is considered the toughest league, so as a defender, strength should be the first quality to possess. In the defense line, Chilwell is stronger than Alonso who tends to fall at any slightest touch. Premier League has strong and fast attackers and needs strong and fast defenders. Alonso is neither fast nor strong in the defense, this tends to expose the central defenders and makes them more vulnerable. Chilwell, on the other hand, is faster and stronger though he is prone to errors sometimes. His(Chilwell) qualities make him a better left-back than Alonso and he should be given more chances to prove himself.
