Beach Soccer WC: Paraguay, USA crash out

Host nation Paraguay and USA became the first teams to crash out of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup following defeats on day 3 of the tournament.

Switzerland defeated their host 7-6 after extra time to send them packing. The Swiss raced into a 4-1 lead before Paraguay produced stunning moments to level the score at 5-5 and force extra time - the tournament’s first. Dejan Stankovic scored a hat-trick including two extra time penalties to ensure Switzerland progress to the next round and Paraguay crash out.

Earlier, Japan recorded a 4-3 victory over the United States to make it out of the group stage, handing USA a ticket back home. The Americans went ahead first but  soon surrendered their lead to the Japanese who ran out winners at the Los Pyandi Stadium, Asunción.

Last round of matches in group A will see Japan play Switzerland in battle for supremacy and Paraguay play USA in battle for pride.

In a finely poised Group B, Uruguay pulled a surprise beating Italy 4-3. The result meant Uruguay have maximum points after two games but still have to wait for qualification. Tahiti bounced back from the humiliating opening day defeat against Italy to record a 6-1 victory over Mexico, boosting their chances of making it out of the group.

In games on offer today, two African representatives, Nigeria and Senegal, will look to bounce back from their opening day defeats with games against Oman and Belarus respectively. Highest ranked Beach Soccer playing nation Brazil and Portugal face off in what will be the game of the day, while Russia tackle UAE.
