German star Antonio Rudiger has been a revelation for Chelsea at the heart of defence since compatriot Thomas Tuchel took charge at Stamford Bridge. His form has greatly improved and he has become a mainstay in the Chelsea team after being frozen out under Frank Lampard.
Despite the presence of former PSG and Brazil captain Thiago Silva, Rudiger has become Chelsea's defence commander and is playing with a lot of confidence at the moment. His character is also that of a shrewd leader at the back for the blues.
The German international was not one hundred percent fit for the Champions League second leg tie against Real Madrid on Wednesday night. Nevertheless he managed to play through the pain with a mask. This shows real character on his part and he is finally starting to prove doubters wrong.
His form since Tuchel took over has been impressive and shows that Thiago Silva is not the true commander of the Chelsea defence line. Perhaps he only needs to add a few more goals to his game and he could reach the level of former club captain John Terry.
He could even be the long term replacement the club is looking for Thiago Silva. Rudiger is learning slowly from the Brazil international and when the time comes for him to prove himself, he will be ready.
