After the 2019 AFCON, where he emerged as the highest goalscorer in the competition, Odion Ighalo announced his retirement from the National Team. Then it seemed like an odd decision since he was not yet spent as a player.
Three years after his retirement, various Nigerians have called for him to come out of retirement and play for the Super Eagles. The reasons given for this includes his experience and the perceived poor performances of his replacements.
However I believe that Odion Ighalo should not be brought back to the Super Eagles.
First of all, in as much as experience is important, it's not the only thing that is important in a team. The amount of talent and teamwork, coupled with the manager's tactical acumen and luck have more say in a team winning titles than mere experience.
Ighalo may have talent but his ability is not as great as the likes of Jay Jay Okocha that may decide if the national team wins the next AFCON or not.
Moreover, in Osimhen, I believe we have a successor to Ighalo. Osimhen is younger, plays for a better team and seems determined to take over the scoring responsibilities of the Super Eagles. If Ighalo returns it may spell another time on the bench for Victor Osimhen, which may not be helpful to the young man's confidence. Also what will be the fate of Simy, Paul Onuachu and Dressers?
Moreover the striker position is not the most pressing part of the Eagles that need replacement. The goalkeeper situation has not been totally sorted out and we need creativity in the middle of the park. Those two areas of the team need more focus than the strikers position.
Ighalo is a good player, no doubt about that. But it's not compulsory to bring him back.
