We have witnessed a rare bit of history in the Spanish La Liga this weekend as a player has recorded an appearance statistics which many professional footballers can only be envious of. Athletic Bilbao striker Iñaki Williams Arthuer was named as part of their starting lineup for their clash against Atletico Madrid on Saturday afternoon. The match is his 200th straight appearance for them without missing a single match in that run.
About the player
Iñaki Williams was born in Bilbao, Spain to Ghanaian parents who migrated to the country by crossing the desert on foot. He is 27 years old (born June 15, 1994) and plays primarily as a center forward for Athletic Bilbao.
He started his playing career in a local club where his impressive performances attracted the interest of Athletic Bilbao.
He joined their youth team and continued to impress but eventually got his chance to play for the first team in 2014, when their main striker at the time - Aritz Aduriz picked up an injury that ruled him out for some time.
Since he made his debut for Bilbao, Iñaki Williams has established himself as a key player for the Spanish giants with loads of goals to his name and some key contributions which has led them to success.
Williams scored from an early goal in their outstanding 3–2 win over Barcelona in the Spanish Supercup final early this year to hand them the trophy.
Last weekend, he made his 300th appearance for the club and marked the occasion by scoring a goal in a 2–0 win against RCD Mallorca.
Williams has been a transfer target for several top European club sides on different occasions but he decided to show loyalty to his childhood club by staying back to help them. Making 200 straight appearance for a club is an incredible achievement for any player and it shows how important he is to them.
