UEFA Champions League

Chelsea to start Defense of the UCL title - Check out their Defensive options for the 2021/22 UCL

Thomas Tuchel and his Chelsea contingent will start the Blues' second ever UEFA Champions League trophy defense on Tuesday when they face Zenit St Petersburg at Stamford Bridge in the first game of the group H.

Winning the UEFA Champions League is a glory that many European clubs aspire to attain. At the moment the club is celebrating their triumph, there's probably no greater feeling in the world than that for the Players. However, there's no good thing that doesn't come with it's disadvantage, including winning the UEFA Champions League.

Winning the UEFA Champions League add more fixtures and Match schedules to the roster of the Winners. For example, this season, Arsenal has an higher chance to win the English premier league title if they get their games right because they are neither playing UEFA Champions League or the Europa league. What Arsenal has in their front is just the English premier league, Emirates FA Cup and the EFL Cup.

Compare that with Chelsea who will be featuring in all the competitions that Arsenal's playing in, then the Champions League fixture and the FIFA club world Cup.

During the 2012/13 Season, the season that follows Chelsea's first ever UEFA Champions League title-winning Season, Chelsea competed for 8 silverware. The Blues ended up almost losing everything and had to settle for the Europa league out of the 8 titles they competed for.

That Season, Chelsea competed for the English premier league, Emirates FA Cup, league Cup, community Shield, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa league, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA club world cup. Unfortunately, they lost everything except for the Europa league.

Their defense of the UEFA Champions League trophy that season was short-lived after they were eliminated at the group stage of European Competition. It doesn't get worse than that, the defending Champion was eliminated at the group stage.

This is what Thomas Tuchel will be hoping to change when the Blues start their second ever Champions league defense on Tuesday evening at Stamford bridge.

The Blues are in the same group with Italian giant Juventus, Malmo and Zenit St Petersburg. Russian outfit Zenit will visit Stamford bridge as Thomas Tuchel will be hoping to kickstart his title defense with a victory.

The Blues have already recorded some massive victory this season. They defeated Villarreal on Penalty to win the UEFA Super Cup. They've also won three out of their 4 league games and holding Liverpool to a draw at Anfield Stadium.

The Blues' Manager has registered 9 Defenders in his Champions League squad for the 2021/22 Campaign. The club's academy graduate Trevor Chalobah who started against Villarreal in the UEFA Super Cup before scoring his first Chelsea goal on his premier league debut made Tuchel's Champions League Squad.

Other Defenders on the list are Cesar Azpilicueta, Marcos Alonso, Ben Chilwell, Reece James, Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr.
