From Fullbacks to the Central backs: Comparing the Defensive options of 2021/22 EPL title Contenders

Manchester City cruised towards the English premier league title last Season unhindered. The Citizens were on the 8th position last December but they were back at the top of table by Game Week 30. The Citizens had accrued 71 points on the league table which was 15 points more than the 56 points that Manchester United had. Of course, Manchester United made attempted to wrestle the league out of the Citizens' hand but in the end, Manchester City won the race.

Many Football enthusiasts opined that last season was the Red Devils' chance to end their 8 years of premier league title drought but the club conceded some avoidable defeats and dropped points along the way which in turn put them out of reach of the title race.

Unlike last season and the season before that that Manchester City and Liverpool seemed to have won the league title effortlessly, the race is expected to be tight this season.

When we are talking about the title contenders for this season, only about 4 clubs come to mind and before you start wondering which clubs, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspurs are not among. Let's be real here, Arsenal would be lucky if they even finish in the top four with their current huge goals difference deficit.

For Tottenham Hotspurs, their last two defeats isn't exactly helping their standing on the league table. Some netizens did made a joke of Tottenham Hotspurs when they were topping the league table at the beginning of this season. The joke goes thus: "Tottenham Hotspurs at the top of the league table is like an elephant on a tree, you don't know how it got there but you know it's going to come down."

Apart from Tottenham Hotspurs and Arsenal, the real title contenders this season based on their recent performance and the quality of players they have are Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in particular will have a lot of pressure on him to deliver. Three seasons since he took over and zero trophy, that's not a Manager that the club would want to continue to stick with at the end of this season unless He wins a trophy.

The club does have quality Defenders that could help their title chase. They've got a good Left back in Luke Shaw who's arguably the best Left back in the English premier league currently. They have Aaron Wan-bissaka as their Right-back while Raphael Varane and Harry Marguire are their Central backs.

For Chelsea, Thomas Tuchel has numerous options to explore for the Fullback and the Central back position though, his Fullbacks now operate as Wing-backs.

There's Marcos Alonso and Ben Chilwell at the left wing-back while Reece James, Cesar Azpilicueta and Callum Hudson-Odoi play in the right wing-back. Trevor Chalobah, Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger constitute Thomas Tuchel's Central back options.

Manchester City has Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias, John Stones, Aymeric Laporte, Nathan Ake, Zinchenko and Joao Cancelo.

Liverpool has Virgil Van Dijk, Ibrahim Konate, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Konstantinos Tsimikas.
