The summer transfer window ought to have been in its exciting crucial stage by now. However, the pandemic has derailed a lot of plans for many clubs and the particular economic issues that it poses may drastically alter their purchasing and selling powers.

Nevertheless, most Premier League sides are still looking to make their vital investments and of all the teams, it is the traditional top-six who will have the most potential to prove in their business. Here is the signing that each club must most focus on securing.

Liverpool – Thiago Alcântara

Jurgen Klopp’s side will only have to improve upon the best as following the incredible feats of the past two seasons will certainly take some effort.

In terms of additions, however, the Merseyside Reds are focusing on adding experience to their roster. As such, most claims suggest that they will acquire outgoing Bayern Munich player Thiago Alcântara.

The 29-year-old would bring heaps of experience and versatility to Anfield. In particular, the Premier League champions would benefit from having him play ahead and make crucial passes, giving competition to the likes of Naby Keita and Georginio Wijnaldum in the midfield.

Manchester City – Kalidou Koulibaly

The Napoli star is firm on Pep Guardiola’s radar and the Serie A outfit dropping their asking price could end up making the deal a manageable one for the Sky Blues.

Despite netting 93 goals in the League this season, the best by quite a margin, City has still leaked 35 so far this campaign. Doing so in crucial fixtures has been their undoing domestically and a player of Koulibaly’s quality could do wonders in amending the same.

Moreover, John Stones and Nicholas Otamendi have been leaning on the inconsistent for far too long for a team of City’s caliber and thus such a signing is vital.

Chelsea – Milan Skriniar

A similar defensive blow is also at hand for Frank Lampard. Even though the popular demand has been for the likes of an attacker like Kai Havertz this season, the London side’s big issue is the sheer amount of goals they’ve let in, the worst of any side in the top six at this stage.

As such, it has often been by virtue of sheer luck and the incompetency of the teams below that has kept Chelsea afloat in the top-four. In this regard, Milan Skriniar is arguably the best defender who is on sale right now for the kind of centre-back that Chelsea could do with to amend their flaws.

Since City is likely to go for Koulibaly, Chelsea are the only other Premier League team with the purchasing power and intent to go for the Inter Milan man.

Manchester United – Jadon Sancho

A name that has been linked to the Old Trafford outfit for far too long. While Ole Gunnar Solskjær and company are still yet to land on a common transfer fee for the starlet with Borussia Dortmund, a deal still is likely to be made.

At this point though, the sheer hunger and brilliance with which the front three of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Mason Greenwood are scoring, adding Sancho for a high fee may raise eyebrows.

However, United need such an option up-front and the fluid interchangeability that the trident could offer is very likely to become the most threatening aspect of the Old Trafford attack from next season.

Arsenal – Thomas Partey

The clubs hereon would need to invest keeping in mind that their very place amongst the traditional top-six is at threat.

For the Gunners, the purse-strings remain tight as usual and the Ghanaian international would be the ideal player to pursue and secure. Atletico Madrid are certainly playing hardball and are only willing to sell for the right offer, but Partey is certainly a more amicable transfer to arrange than Philippe Coutinho for the London side.

Further, the holding midfielder would lend Mikel Arteta a much-needed source of balance, at the back of which the rest of the rebuild can be secured.

Tottenham Hotspur – Sergej Milinković-Savić

Spurs desperately need to retain their once clinical standing in England next season and landing a player that Jose Mourinho was once interested in may be the way to go.

The 25-year-old was on Manchester United’s radar during Mourinho’s tenure there and would add an important element of versatility given his tendency to play both as a holding midfielder as well as operate more conventionally from the center.

Further, he could also aid the Portuguese gaffer in bringing about his style fully to Spurs with Sergej coming in as a powerhouse figure to shake things up in the region.

Will all these clubs succeed in their transfer ambitions or will poor spending and economic conditions derail the plans and hopes of some?
