FIFA World Cup

What Chelsea stands to gain and lose as FIFA announces new dates for the FIFA Club World Cup

Part of the perks of winning the UEFA Champions League is participating in exclusive tournaments like the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. Clubs like Barcelona and Bayern Munich that have won Sextuple in a year in the history of club football have been able to do so because they won all the titles they competed in and went ahead to win other silverware like the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA club world cup.

Chelsea have also won the exclusivity to play for some Silverware that aren't available for the rest of the clubs in Europe. Earlier this season, they defeated Villarreal to win the UEFA Super Cup. The Blues could have gone ahead to win the FIFA club world cup but the Continental title had to be suspended because of the high cases of Covid-19 in the Nations that was supposed to host it.

According to Daily Post, FIFA had earlier chose Japan as the host Nation of the 2021 FIFA club world cup before the Asian country eventually pulled out. South Africa was also chosen as the destination of the tournament but the African Nation also halted the plan because of the Pandemic and this led to the outright suspension of football event until further notice.

In recent development, FIFA has announced the date of the club world cup. According to the Football governing body, the latest edition of the tournament will be played in United Arab Emirates next year.

Recall that the FIFA club world cup has 10 participating teams. The teams participating in the Continental title are the teams that have emerged Winner in each of the continent of the world. The Blues will play against the Champions of Africa Al Ahly and New Zealand's Auckland City.

How does the new dates benefit and affect Chelsea?

Disadvantages

1. If Chelsea had played the FIFA club world cup this year and won it, it would have boosted the portfolio of Jorginho who's among the front-runners for the 2021 FIFA Ballon D'or Award.

The Italian had already won the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and European Championship this year. A fourth title would have placed Jorginho among the strong contenders of individual honor.

2. The Blues can't claim Winning a treble in 2021. It would have been a good look on Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea profile if Chelsea won the Champions League, Super Cup and FIFA club world cup this year. It won't be an ideal treble because it's not won in the same Season but it will still be a treble.

Advantage

The delay in the schedule of the FIFA club world cup also helped the Blues. This means that Thomas Tuchel has one less competition to focus on this year.

Traveling to Asia or Africa would have been quite hectic, and the Blues will be forced to stretch their Squad thin if they have to go back and forth for the FIFA club world cup. Now that it's off Thomas Tuchel's plate, they can pull all their strength and resources towards staying on top of the English premier league table.

With the Injury crisis that has recently hit the Blues as Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku joined Christian Pulisic on the Injury bed, the delay couldn't have come at a more pleasant time.
