Over the years, we have seen a lot of breakthrough stars who were able to earn moves to some of the biggest football clubs in the world after their breakthrough season. Some of those players chose to stay at their breakthrough clubs. However, many of those players after changing clubs or playing a few more seasons with their breakthrough clubs have not been able to live up to the hype. In this article, we would be taking a look at seven of the best players in this category.
Manchester United striker, Anthony Martial is perhaps, one of the biggest players who never reached their potential. The Frenchman set the English Premier League on fire in his first season. He also won the Golden Boy Award. However, a series of injuries and inconsistency has ensured that he hasn't reached his potential. In 2018, Anthony Martial was worth €65 million but currently, his market value stands at €15 million.
Another player on this list is Liverpool midfielder, Naby Keita. After his breakthrough at RB Leipzig, the Guinean star was signed by Liverpool in 2018. Since then, his market value has fallen from €65 million to €17 million due to a lack of game time and his inability to stay fit.
Another player who was never able to reach his potential is Mario Gotze. The German attacker graduated from the academy of Borussia Dortmund and after breaking into the first team, he was signed by Bayern Munich. His spell with the Bavarians was largely unsuccessful and he was sold back to Borussia Dortmund. Since then, his career has gone on a decline.
From a player who scored the goal that gave Germany the 2014 FIFA World Cup and was worth €55 million at the time, the 30-year-old currently plays for Eintracht Frankfurt and is currently worth €13 million.
The fourth player on the list is Nicolas Pepe. The Ivorian attacker was signed by Arsenal from Lille for a club-record fee of €80 million. However, his three-year stay at the club was unsuccessful and the Gunners had to loan him to Nice in the French Ligue 1. He would be returning to the Emirates Stadium next summer but he doesn't have a future with the English Premier League club. As of when the Gunners signed him, he was worth €75 million. Currently, he is worth €22 million.
