An excellent squad depth is one thing that gives a team an advantage. What this means is that such a team is not built around particular players no matter how good they are and that whenever these players are not available, the team will continue to thrive. However, while most teams have been expanding their squad depth, others were content with certain key players and now that they're gone, staying on top of their games is becoming a challenging task.
Without further ado, take a look at two top teams that are currently struggling after losing key players last summer;
Ronaldo's exit from Turin was rather impromptu and didn't afford Juventus enough time to find a suitable replacement before the deadline. However, since the Portugese left, the Old Lady have been a disaster in Serie A with two defeats and two draws that leaves them languishing in the relegation zone.
There's no reason to believe that Juventus are not missing Ronaldo and it is unfortunate they lost him the way they did.
Another team having trouble this season is no other than FC Barcelona who like Juventus lost their star man Lionel Messi in unfortunate circumstances. Despite winning a couple of games in La Liga this season, the mid-week trashing by Bayern Munich coupled with yesterday's draw at Camp Nou against Granada was a poignant reminder of Barcelona's gradual decline as no one could imagine seeing Gerard Pique, a central defender heading their attacking play.
Conclusively, although Juventus and Barcelona lost their star men last summer, it doesn't in anyway justify their poor run of form. They both need to improve and do that very fast or risk a disastrous season.
